If you want a mouse exterminator, you have two options: hire one or be one yourself. If you don’t want to have to deal with mice, go ahead and contact your local pest control services, otherwise, read on…

Mouse Extermination Tips

If you suspect that you have a mouse or mice in your house, you should first find out if it is a mouse in the first place because the methods for mouse extermination are slightly different from the methods for rat extermination. Generally, a mouse will be smaller than a rat and have a more proportional body. Rats have bigger heads than mice when compared to the rest of their body. Because a mouse is smaller than a rat, it means that they can get into your house through tiny spaces, sometimes through openings no bigger than a dime! How to get rid of mice...Here are the steps you should follow so that you can do mouse extermination in your own house.

1. Clean up your house! The reason there are mice in the first place is because they see that they can get an easy bite or can make themselves quite comfortable on your premises. If you have garbage cans inside or outside your house you have to make sure that they are tightly sealed and that there are no treats falling out of them for mice to snatch up. The things that attract mice, other than food, are water and shelter as well. This means that the outside of your house should be clean as well with no leaf debris, branches, or unorganized firewood. Yes, you can have firewood outside, just make sure that it is covered up with some sort of tarp so that nobody can make themselves comfortable in it. You also don’t want easily accessible water outside. This means that your cat or dog water has to stay inside. The inside of your house should be clean as well. You don’t want junk all over your house in the form of dirty clothes, newspapers, and boxes. To deter a mouse from getting near your house you can place peppermint (in the form of a spray or plants) on the perimeter of your house. You can also get creative and place the urine from your cats litter box next to entry holes you find outside your house. A popular method for deterring mice is to place mothballs all over your house because mice hate the smell. In terms of mouse extermination and preventing it in the first place, the aforementioned rules will keep the mouse or mice away for a long time.

2. Look for any entry or exit holes on the inside and outside of your house. Because they can get through tiny dime-sized spaces you have to look for any holes that are at least that big. Rather than sealing all the holes off immediately, which may trap them in your house forever, use the holes you found to start setting mouse exterminating traps. It’s also a good idea to set traps or deterrents where you see mouse droppings or urine. Whenever you come into contact with mice, be it with themselves or their waste, make sure to wear gloves and thoroughly wash your hands. To clean up the waste, rather than sweeping it away, you have to disinfect the area with bleach and detergent.

3. One of the more popular mouse exterminators, in terms of traps, are snap traps. Although they are not the most PETA friendly way of getting rid of pests they do their job very well. Just place some peanut butter, fruit, or bacon and you should start killing the mice in no time. You can buy snap traps online or at your local home improvement store such as Lowe’s or Home Depot. If you have a cat, you already know that it functions very well as a mouse exterminator. If you’re like me you’re going to want to get a humane mouse extermination. If you search for “Smart Mouse Trap - Humane Mousetrap” on Amazon.com you’ll find a popular (over 100 reviews), nicely reviewed (4.5/5 star), and cheap mouse exterminator (costs $14). If you just search for “mouse trap” on Amazon you’ll find the traditional snap traps such as the Victor Mouse Trap for $6. The mouse exterminator cost is clearly inexpensive if you buy traps by yourself. If you are set on hiring a pest control service simply search for pest control in your local business directory or at Yellowpages.com so that you can find mouse exterminators in your area. How much does a mouse exterminator cost? Generally, you can be charged around $200. Keep in mind that when you are paying this mouse extermination cost, you are essentially paying for the convenience of not having to deal with the problem yourself because these “pros” will do the same exact stuff mentioned in this article. Whatever mouse extermination method you use, do not use poison! You do not want dead mice in places you can’t even reach.

Mice are definitely an unwelcome visitor in anyone’s home. You never know what diseases or parasites they could be carrying. That’s why I would choose a hygienic mousetrap, like the Kill and Seal Mouse Trap by Victor. No fluids or parasites will ever escape from this trap, because the mouse is sealed inside. Plus, it’s easy-to-use.

Here's the trap I'm referring to:

I have two "pocket doors" in my apartment. One is a bedroom door and one is a bathroom door that is right next to the kitchen. I have seen mice run into the wall through the hole left by the pocket door. I've tried to cover it, but nothing works that will keep it functional. Even if I cover the bottom which has a huge gap, both side of the sliding door have large gaps for mice to crawl in. Any suggestions?
